UMAY BILIG SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY LAB
Umay Bilig Lab is a social psychology research laboratory focusing on moral psychology, self and identity processes, psychology of women, beliefs about psychology, the position of psychological science in Türkiye, and positive psychological constructs.
The name Umay Bilig consists of two old Turkish concepts that symbolize the laboratory’s research orientation. Umay is a goddess in Turkic mythology who is regarded as the protector of women, children, and newborns. She is associated with fertility, compassion, warmth, and protection. In this respect, the name serves as a meaningful symbol for the laboratory’s work on psychology of women, morality, and human values. Bilig means “knowledge” and “wisdom” in Old Turkic. This concept represents the laboratory’s research on social cognition, belief systems, and psychological myths.
Although visual representations of Umay are limited, the laboratory logo features an original illustration of Umay by the artist Habibe Sicim, used with her permission. I sincerely thank her for granting permission for its use.
